Lesson Learned

I knew it was bound to happen. The Pediatrician tells us things to be careful of each visit, like climbing, reaching for hot drinks, etc. Today, I was baking cookies, trying to get some things done since Caleb is down to one afternoon nap. I am very good about keeping him away from the oven, but I wasn't so good about pushing the cookie sheet far enough back for him not to reach up and touch. Ouch! It was a delayed cry, but I swooped him into my arms and rushed him over to the sink to soak his hand. I was not even sure what part he exactly burned, fingers I assume since he was on his tippy toes, but I was so immediate in my response to get him under the cold water fast! After a few minutes I hopped online to check out first aid for burns and really the best action is to soak hands in cold water for 15 minutes. So I did just that. Caleb didn't mind at all because he loves to splash in water. It was fun for him! We took breaks so I could evaluate his hands, but they didn't seem to bother him. So we soaked and splashed a few more times just to be safe. I think it is hard to tell right away if there will be any redness or swelling, but I am crossing my fingers that it was a very quick, minor burn!

I learned a lesson today. I cannot bake cookies when Caleb is awake for 2 reasons. 1) Its not just the oven I have to worry about, he can reach up and touch the cookie sheet! 2) He will want to eat all of the cookies on the counter! I felt like I was torturing him with these delicious treats, similar to our trips to the grocery store when he sees all of the balloon displays and cannot have one of them. Breaks my heart.

A part of me was scared to call Kerry and admit my guilt, but then I was reminded by my mother in law that I was not being careless, nor should I feel guilty. Accidents happen and we learn from them. Caleb will hopefully now remember the words "HOT, Don't touch!" I will remember to limit my baking to naptime :)

Kids eat free EVERYDAY!

We went to My Big Fat Greek restaurant tonight and now that Caleb is starting to eat kids meals, we were delighted to see the banner "Kids eat free everyday!" He enjoyed coloring with Daddy while we waited for our food to arrive. Even though he is suffering from a cold, congestion and ear infection, I must say he is very pleasant to be around, even when we are out to eat! Caleb had chicken strips, fries and ketchup! First he dipped his fries which was very cute. Then he decided to eat the fry, then dip his fingers in ketchup and put it in his mouth that way! He was a ketchup mess, but totally cute! He likes to wipe his yucky hands in his hair, but food makes a nice mousse! Maybe I can hide some green beans in ketchup?

3 o'clock blues!

Caleb has been suffering a cold for almost 2 weeks now. Kerry and I just about a week. I guess I can take the blame for taking him to San Diego to visit my best friend whose daughter happened to get sick when we arrived. I feel so bad for him, yet he seems so happy with a runny nose and cough. It doesn't seem to bother him in the least, except for his 3am awakenings this past week. What is the deal? He hasn't been sleeping well during the day for his naps and when we put him down at night it takes him nearly 2 hours to fall asleep. Not crying, just babbling in his bed. This NEVER happens! I thought it could have been the Benadryl we attempted 2 nights in a row per the recommendation of our Pediatrician, but it is still happening! He wakes about 3am and just wants to babble. Not cry, but babble for maybe 2 hours. I know when I am sick, I like to get plenty of rest......Caleb however is the opposite! We just found out from a friend that rubbing vapo rub on the feet supposedly works. We tried last night, but when I read this morning about it online, you are supposed to put socks on apparently! Socks on tonight!

Caleb was terribly upset this afternoon, awakening from a very short nap so Kerry made an appointment with our Pediatrician. Turns out, my boy has his first ear infection on top of a nasty cold! He is on his first antibiotic and he loves the yummy raspberry taste! I believe this now answers my question above, What's the deal?

We haven't been much of anywhere the past 2 weeks as I don't want any of Caleb's little friends to get his awful germs! I just want my poor boy to get better and sleep through the night again! If anyone has any suggestions besides cool mist humidifier, vapo rub and saline nose drops, please let me know!

Balloon Sandwich

I took the car in to get an oil change today so we walked across the street to the mall to kill some time. As we were strolling the mall, Caleb saw several children with balloons from Chick-fil-a. I could see the sadness on his face, wondering why he didn't have one too? I had always told myself that if I was ever in need of a balloon, I should just swipe one from the car dealerships. They have plenty attracting their lots! On our way back, I decided to do just that. I failed to consider a few things before doing so. 1) The size of the balloon. 2) Would anyone see me and approach me? I quickly untied a balloon from a nearby car and quickly scurried on my way not realizing that I had untied, not 1 ENORMOUS balloon, but 2! They were hooked together! Now, I was strolling with 2 obnoxious balloons hoping not to be seen! Caleb was thrilled, but I think a bit overwhelmed by the size! Trying to get Caleb into the car with these balloons was another thing I did not consider. What a mother will do for the love of her son!

P.S. Caleb calls balloons "bubbles". Gotta love it!

Speedy's first surgery!

I was not so excited to hear that Speedy had mild gingivitis and would need a tooth extracted when he came back from his last checkup a few weeks ago. The estimate was approximated at $700-1000k for the procedure. Being a SAHM, I have cut out some expenses and recently decided not to renew his veterinary insurance because it simply has not been worth it. Who knows if dental procedures would have been covered anyways.

He went in today and I was pleased when I received a call from the vet saying the tooth just needed to be filled and not extracted because the damage was not as bad as they originally had thought. Now the pain in my heart over another unexpected expense had ceased. Having a filling was much cheaper than an extraction! No more hard bones for Speedy the dog!

Caleb and I had to go into an exam room to go over Speedy's discharge and the minute we entered Caleb started screaming and made a dash for the door! Poor guy thought he was at the doctor's office again! He eventually got over it when he found a nice cart of medical supplies to keep him busy for a few minutes. Speedy came in and Caleb's face lit up. He finally got to see his pal that had been gone all day.

When we got home, I had hoped that Caleb would allow Speedy some peace so he could rest and recover from the anesthesia. No chance of that happening! Caleb wanted to play with his BFF. Where had he been all day?

All in all, I am glad Speedy's first surgical procedure was dental related. He is nearly 7 years old and has been healthy his entire life. Speedy is a part of our family and he is worth the cost. I would have gladly paid $1000k for Speedy to have that million dollar smile :)
