I knew it was bound to happen. The Pediatrician tells us things to be careful of each visit, like climbing, reaching for hot drinks, etc. Today, I was baking cookies, trying to get some things done since Caleb is down to one afternoon nap. I am very good about keeping him away from the oven, but I wasn't so good about pushing the cookie sheet far enough back for him not to reach up and touch. Ouch! It was a delayed cry, but I swooped him into my arms and rushed him over to the sink to soak his hand. I was not even sure what part he exactly burned, fingers I assume since he was on his tippy toes, but I was so immediate in my response to get him under the cold water fast! After a few minutes I hopped online to check out first aid for burns and really the best action is to soak hands in cold water for 15 minutes. So I did just that. Caleb didn't mind at all because he loves to splash in water. It was fun for him! We took breaks so I could evaluate his hands, but they didn't seem to bother him. So we soaked and splashed a few more times just to be safe. I think it is hard to tell right away if there will be any redness or swelling, but I am crossing my fingers that it was a very quick, minor burn!
I learned a lesson today. I cannot bake cookies when Caleb is awake for 2 reasons. 1) Its not just the oven I have to worry about, he can reach up and touch the cookie sheet! 2) He will want to eat all of the cookies on the counter! I felt like I was torturing him with these delicious treats, similar to our trips to the grocery store when he sees all of the balloon displays and cannot have one of them. Breaks my heart.
A part of me was scared to call Kerry and admit my guilt, but then I was reminded by my mother in law that I was not being careless, nor should I feel guilty. Accidents happen and we learn from them. Caleb will hopefully now remember the words "HOT, Don't touch!" I will remember to limit my baking to naptime :)

Robin, you are such a good mommy! Caleb is adorable and so blessed to have you. I love this story. I made the mistake of making cupcakes in front of Jared for Scott's b'day. He spent the rest of the week begging for "ca-cakes" at every meal. Your blog is super cute and fun to read. Thanks! Hope you guys are doing good!
You would totally laugh if you knew how I taught Nathan about hot things.
I don't know why the image came to me but it was the "Danger, Will Robinson" catch phrase from Lost in Space. So whenever Nathan got close to something that could cause harm, I'd yell 'DANGER, DANGER!" He knows it now. Of course, we are at playground one day and I was sitting a little ways from Nathan, when he got close to one of those openings on the play stucture, I automatically yelled "Danger, Danger!" and everyone laughed at me. But it's worked for us! Hope Caleb's little fingers recover. ;)
