Everytime Caleb is playing with my keys in the car, I ALWAYS keep one door open. I swore to myself, I would never have all doors closed at once if he was playing with my keys. Today, I made the mistake. I gave him my keys while we waited in line at the post office. Keeps him happy and preoccupied. I think he also likes the metal taste........ewww! We came out and I buckled him in and let him continue to play with the keys because I had to stamp some letters for work. In that brief instant of closing the back door and opening the driver side.......click! NOOOOOOOOOOOO! Please God no! Luckily there was a woman getting out of her car who let me borrow her phone to call Kerry. He did not pick up, so I left a frantic message. I stood there peering through the window at my sweet boy, telling him that he could touch the buttons for once in his life! The one time he has the freedom to touch the buttons he has no interest! Touch the buttons Caleb. Touch the buttons. He just sat there staring at me, jingling the keys around, probably wondering why I was peeking through the window from outside. Then what I thought was an answered prayer came driving through the parking lot........a locksmith van. I flagged him down, but my prayer was not answered. He was not a locksmith for cars. He let me use his phone and I was finally able to get a hold of Kerry. He was on his way! Daddy was coming to save the day, I told Caleb through the window. At this moment, Caleb started to press the buttons, just not the right one. Then he got upset, threw them down and began crying. Kerry was my only hope. Another lady stopped to let me know the Fire Department will unlock your car for free if a child is inside. Good to know, but from this day forward, I will never make this mistake again. Kerry arrived with the other set of keys to rescue us! Caleb had calmed down once he saw Daddy. I felt horrible, but Kerry was not even mad at me. He comforted me, showered Caleb in kisses and the past 15 minutes of fear had subsided.

wow! My husband did that once. He left the car on with the auto start and had the keys in the car. He stepped out to do something and the doors were locked. They girls were in the car with the car on. I was at church on a Saturday and he could not get a hold of me. So the fire dept and police came to open the doors. So it happens to most but it is still very scarey.
Oh Robin I feel for you. I have done that with Josh in the car. It was very scary and 5 minutes feels like forever. I am glad you all survived (and you learned your lesson :) just kidding)
OH MY GOSH...(note to self, never give Nathan the car keys)...I think considering your circumstances, you handled the situation as well as you could and good to know about the fire department helping out! Thanks for sharing.
